Education Crisis in Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the youngest countries in the world; 60 percent of the population is under 30 and 34 percent is under 14.

We also have the second highest number of children out of school in the world, i.e.22.6 million children.

This problem is compounded by the fact that a majority of students in Government primary schools is functionally illiterate. Government primary schools cater to the largest segment of our society and largely cater to the low-income strata.

Consider the following statistics from the Annual Status of Education Report 2014 – a nationwide survey:

  • 54 % of students in Class V cannot read a story in their native language (Urdu, Sindhi or Pashto)
  • 56% of Class V students cannot read a story in English
  • 60 % of students in Class V cannot do two-digit arithmetic

The state of basic facilities in Government primary schools located in rural areas is abysmal:

  • 49% of Government primary schools do not have functioning toilets
  • 43% do not have clean drinking water facility for the students or teachers
  • 68% do not have a playground
  • 39% do not have a boundary wall.

Students of Government primary schools lag behind their private-school counterparts by 1.5 to 2.5 years in terms of their reading and arithmetic skills.

Our approach to address the education crisis in Pakistan is to improve academics and provide vital missing facilities in Government primary schools under a public-private partnership framework.
